Different methods have been used in the past to measure the significance of an article. The most common method is a
citation analysis which aims to determine the ‘popularity’ of an article by counting the number of times it is cited by others
in a given network (Cronin and Ding, 2011). Ding et al. (2009) argue that in addition to ‘popularity’ of an article measured by
the number of citations, the ‘prestige’ is another important indicator which is the number of times an article is cited by highly
cited articles. In other words, a popular article (a highly-cited paper) may not necessarily be a prestigious one although in
some cases there might be a strong positive correlation between the two measures. PageRank is therefore used as a measure
for both popularity and prestige.
