organize themselves as a group and pull all their water for the day
at once from the well. Unlike a conventional pumping test, water
could not be “wasted,” so the women would pour the water into
provided vessels. After the pumping part of the test was over, the
women would then use this water at their leisure to meet their
daily needs.
Each of the four wells was tested three times, once in each of the
three seasons described in Section 2. The changing seasons affected
the height of the water table; therefore each well was tested at
three different saturated depths. Each well is approximately
10e12 m deep and the saturated depths during pumping for each
well ranged from 1 to 8 m. The wells were chosen for their spatial
distribution throughout the village and their ability to provide
water during the driest period in the year.
