BRIEFING 7 - KEY POINTS TO REMEMBER
Always make sure that your behaviour remains within the professional standards throughout your involvement in the role of a chaperon. Avoid actions or behaviours that could be seen as poor practice or potentially abusive. Stay alert to any unacceptable behaviour and raise your concerns with the Child Protection Team members. In general, supporting adults participating in the event should NEVER:
• Develop a relationship with a child which could in anyway be seen as exploitative or abusive;
• Hit or otherwise physically assault or physically/psychologically abuse a child;
• Spend excessive time alone with any child away from other people;
• Take a child to places where they will be alone together;
• Develop physical/sexual relationships with a child or anyone else participating in the event;
• Act in ways that may be abusive or may place a child at risk of abuse;
• Use language/gestures/suggestions/advice which is inappropriate, offensive, abusive or exploitative;
• Behave physically in a manner which is inappropriate or sexually provocative;
• Have a child stay overnight in their room (unless this has been previously agreed with both the child and the child’s parents/guardian);
• Take photographs of a child without his/her consent;
• Act in a manner that disrupts the event/meetings. For example by taking photographs frequently, having chit-chats, sharing your personal opinions/experiences during discussions with children;
• Do things for a child of a personal nature that they can do for themselves, particularly in administering personal hygiene or getting dressed;
• Condone, or participate in behaviour of children which is illegal, unsafe or abusive;
• Act in ways meant to shame, humiliate, belittle or degrade children, or otherwise commit any form of emotional abuse;
• Discriminate against, show differential treatment, or favour a child to the exclusion of others.
Always remember that you are not alone! You will be supported by the Child Protection Team, so you can be effective in your role. Daily debriefings with the Child Protection Team will provide you with an opportunity to raise any concerns and ask for any support you may need to carry out your responsibilities effectively.
