If nurses encourage patients to think about the
problem in a way that is meaningful to them and
linked to daily activities, it can help them set realistic
goals. For example, patients with fecal incontinence
might consider whether the scarcity of public
restrooms and the fear of soiled clothing or associated
odor have caused them to curtail activities outside
of the home. This realization may suggest a goal,
such as going out with friends when desired.
