Lignin is the second most abundant biopolymer, after
cellulose on the earth. It exists naturally in all woody
plants and is integrated into the plant cell wall. Type of
tissues and cell wall layers as well as the stages and conditions
of development determine the total content of
lignin in any plant body, even within the same plan
Nevertheless, only white-rot fungi are able to completely mineralize lignin because they have a complex enzymatic machinery (Martínez et al. 2005).
