For working dogs the ‘fit for function; fit for life’ slogan of the Kennel Club makes clear what is expected of such dogs. For show dogs the ‘function’ is frequently less obvious and ‘fitness’ is not always regarded as a priority. As a consequence, there are breeds with deformities related to the breed standard, especially so when exaggerations become fixed within a breed (e.g. brachycephalic dogs), as well as breeds with debilitating genetic disorders (e.g. syringomyelia).
