Industrial Grade” galvanizing or Hot Dip Galvanizing (for items with welded attachments) is the preferred structural steel application where galvanizing is compatible with the plant atmosphere and the final surface finish (if applicable) is compatible with galvanizing. Cadmium plating and electroplated zinc are not acceptable. High strength fasteners can be hot-dip galvanized if the tensile strength is below 145 ksi (1000 MPa). Galvanizing of bolts with tensile strength of 145 ksi (1000 MPa) or above is prohibited unless a procedure with details of hydrogen embrittlement prevention has been submitted to and approved by the Owner. Where the final surface finish is not compatible with galvanizing (some types of fire proofing, severely corrosive environments, etc.) the application requirements of the final surface finish shall be followed.
