As touted during the opening credits, “the real heroes here” are writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (ZOMBIELAND). While the narrative is a fairly straight-forward origin story, even with its use of flashbacks to add interest, the spark that ignites is found within their insanely snappy, witty dialogue. They even blessedly get in a few jabs at X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE and GREEN LANTERN. Ex-special ops turned hired muscle Wade Wilson (my 2nd husband Ryan Reynolds) has the most important thing in life going for him – the love of a lifetime with prostitute Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) – when he’s struck down by terminal cancer. With nothing left to lose, he agrees to be used as a guinea pig, taking part in an experimental, immortality-granting program run by Dr. Francis Freeman (Ed Skrein). Only they aren’t exactly in the business of making superheroes. Nope. The good doctor – supervillain nickname Ajax – and his crew are manufacturing mutants. And that’s what happens to Wade, rising from the ashes as Deadpool, a self-healing, ugly AF mutant who’s fueled by revenge.
