In the Neotropics, sloths occupy the arboreal
leaf-eater niche and marsupials dominate the night, while
in Asian rainforests, the diversity of squirrels seems to
have limited the opportunities for small primates.
Pantropical community-level comparisons that included
primates and putative ‘primate equivalents’ would be
particularly valuable and could include rainforests in New
Guinea, where primates are absent and marsupials
occupy all arboreal niches.
