With another month, comes another record high for the Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI) issued by the Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).
For October, the most recent month for which data is available, the Freight TSI hit 121.8, topping September’s 121.4, which was downwardly revised from 121.5.
According to BTS officials, the Freight TSI measures the month-to-month changes in freight shipments in ton-miles, which are then combined into one index. The index measures the output of the for-hire freight transportation industry and consists of data from for-hire trucking, rail, inland waterways, pipelines and air freight.
October marked the fourth straight month the Freight TSI has increased and the eighth month in 2014 it has gone up as well. And it is up 28.8 percent over the last 66 months compared to its April 2009 low of 94.6. October is up 28.8 percent compared to April 2009.
On a year-to-date basis, the Freight TSI is up 2.2 percent annually and is 4.6 percent higher in October 2014 compared to October 2013.
