From Writers of the Harlem Renaissance (African-American Studies)
This instructor found that some of the students in her upper-division course were taking the course primarily to fulfill major requirements; others, to prepare for graduate work in African-American studies or English; and a third group to prepare themselves for careers as professional writers. She put this information to use by creating three working groups within the class, each with somewhat different-but comparable-writing assignments. The whole class continued to read and discuss the same authors and texts in common while realizing some of their diverse writing goals through the “customized” assignments.
