You might have someone from the Inner West say 'There are a lot of people who live in Newtown and the Inner West. Why not start it on Broadway or King Street?' " Rolik said.

Rolik said parade organisers were more concerned about the destination of the parade: "For Mardi Gras, it's not so much the direction as the endpoint of the parade that we're focusing on."
"The opportunity for us is about exploring a post-parade Carnivale if you like and the Darling Harbour precinct is of interest because it's purpose-built," he added.
Staging a post-parade event in Darling Harbour for the broader community could provide a financial bonanza for Mardi Gras, which reported a loss of $177,644 last financial year.
"It provides the opportunity for the organisation to be more sustainable," he said. "If the organisation is more sustainable, it can reinvest its surpluses into the parade to make the parade better. If the parade is better, more people want to come."
