The relationship of global self-esteem to self-evaluation in three areas was assessed by regressing self-esteem on the self-evaluation measures. Separate regression analyses were done for boys and girls. Table II shows the unique variance in self-esteem explained by self-evaluation of school per- formance, popularity, and athletic ability. Boys' self-evaluations in the area af school performance were most predictive of their overall self-esteem. Self- evaluation of popularity was the most important predictor of girls' overallself-esteem.
