Finding and Filtering Techniques
In this first lesson, we'll discuss the various finding and filtering techniques. There are several filtering options within Dynamics AX. The first option is the filter pane. This is an inline pane that slides in from the left and that contains multiple filter criteria that can be applied to the target content. Next is the quick filter. This is a framework-provided filtering mechanism that can appear above any simple list or grid and that provides fast, single column filtering. Then, there is a grid column filtering. A user can define filter conditions and perform single column sorting by using a drop dialog that is open from the grid column header. And finally, there is the advanced filter and sort. For more advanced filtering scenarios, the migrated filter form is available as a page in Dynamics AX. So in this demonstration, I'm going to show you how to use some of the filtering techniques in Microsoft Dynamics AX and in this example, we're going to start on the all purchase order page. So if I select the filters button here, you can see that the in line pane slides in from the left of the screen, which pushes the page content to the right. And this just makes it easier for the users to see the data they want to filter. So this filter pane remains visible either until the user navigates to a new page or if I simply select this show filters button again, it will move that filter pane so it's not visible to the user anymore. So the next filter option is the quick filter. And this is a model control that can be associated with any grid in the system. So for example, if I want to filter for just Contoso, you can see here that a selector drop down appears and this simply just guides you towards the column that you want the filter to be applied to. So in my example, I want the vendor name. So I'll select that. Now I know whatever I type in, it's going to be -- the filter is going to be associated with this column here, vendor name. A developer can also specify the default column for the quick filter. But if no column is specified by the developer, the default column will just be the first field that can be filtered in the grid. So in this case, it will be purchase order. And the next filtering example I want to show you is the grid filtering. . And this experience is more closely aligned with Microsoft Excel. So if I wanted to specifically filter the vendor name column again, I could select this drop down. And this just lets me filter down the column even more. You can sort A to Z, Z to A, or specifically enter another vendor name. Maybe you are just interested in Contoso Asia so you could enter that here. And that would just bring up all of those vendors. You can also select some more advanced filtering options. So instead of begins with, you have some more options. Is exactly, is not, contains, et cetera, that you can pick to closely match your filter criteria and really help you drill down to the data you are most interested in. So going back to this grid filtering vendor name, I'll click apply. And that just -- the results show all of Contoso Asia because that was my specific search criteria. So again, I will select the show filters. And this will slide out that filter pane. And you can do pretty much the same thing you can do as grid filtering but this will filter the whole list instead of just that specific grid. So again, you can have more advanced filter options with these different criteria.
