The other study compared 5 mg riboflavin daily with a placebo (85).
Women receiving iron supplements had higher Hb levels around three months postpartum
(mean difference – MD – 3.4 g/dl, 95% CI 1.51 to 5.29 (82); MD 0.50 g/dl, 95% CI 0.17 to
0.83(87)). Folic acid supplementation was associated with higher Hb levels at three (MD
4 g/dl, 95% CI 3.04 to 4.96) and six months postpartum (MD 6 g/dl, 95% CI 5.04 to 6.96
(84)).
Overall there was lack of evidence for any reliable conclusions to be drawn. From the four
small trials where data were available, they are insufficient for any reliable conclusions to
be drawn about the relative benefits and risks of prophylactic interventions
