Measures of the journey to crime address the different levels of mobility of various offenders. But because of the way the journey is concep- tualized. criminal travel patterns are dislocated from their social context: the journey to crime is conceptualized as being a discrete event. in which the criminal makes sporadic single- purpose forays from the home base with the explicit purpose of committing crimes. The idea that the journey to crime may be part ofa mul- tipurpose trip. and that the commission ofcrimc may be incidental to some other purpose does not seem to have dawned.
