Introduction
In teaching English as a foreign language, instructional materials are of great importance and
have a determining role in students‟ skills development. Being the single most important factor in
academic success, teachers need to be equipped with skills to select appropriate materials for
their students in accordance with the specific variables of the teaching context. One of the
decisions foreign language teachers need to make is to choose between American English or
British English for the development of their students‟ listening and speaking skills.
British English is the form of English spoken in the British Isles from which all other forms of
English have been derived. The present-day British English is not the mother of any other variety
of English but like many others, it is the descendent of the British spoken in earlier times.
