The second largest land carnivore, a polar bear may weigh more then 1,500 pounds (680 kg.) Its white coat provides camouflage as well as protection from the cold. The white hairs are hollow and act as insulation, retaining almost all of the bear's body heat. The animal also has a thick layer of fat to keep it warm. Seals are the polar bear's principal source of food. It hunts them out on the pack ice or attacks them at their breathing holes.
