A 13-year-old Mathayom 1 student was shot to death while sleeping in his parents' house in Yaha district of Yala province early on Sunday, police said.
Pol Col Paponwat Kattiyawaranant, the Yaha police chief, said he was informed of the incident by the boy's father Orachai Ayo, a teacher of Ban Rae School in Thanto district, and mother Nurida Ayo, a teacher of Nikom Pattana 9 School in Bannang Sata district.
Mr Orachai, 38, said he and his wife were woken up by three gunshots from an adjacent room where their son was sleeping. They rushed to the room and found Iklash Ayo had been shot and seriously wounded.
They took the boy to hospital but he died on the way.
Police who examined the scene in Pulae village found evidence of an assailant scaling the wall behind the house and walking to the room where the boy was sleeping. Three shots were fired through the window, hitting Iklash once in the head.
Two spent carbine M1 shells were found outside the house.
Police are trying to determine if the murder was related to the insurgency or a personal conflict as the boy's father was an informant who frequently reported to the authorities about the spread of drugs in the village.
