In this case, he's a neighbor, or someone who is on the fringes of her world, who sees her relationship going bad, but keeps his distance, respecting her choice to stay with her man, despite the escalation of his anger and abuse. Until she's in actual physical danger and then he steps up and saves her. He doesn't jump in the truck with her. She leaves him in the rearview mirror, just like the abusive one.
