The mussel industry removes, and kills, a vast amount of starfish every year. They are
submerged in 50°C water for some time to accomplish this. Starfish that have gone through this
process are referred to as being poached. At the moment, these starfish do not serve a function
once they have been killed. Studies have looked at the potential use of starfish in meal for many
different organisms, but have shown little success (Fisheries, 2012)
