Carlo Petrini developed the Slow Food movement to counteract society's tendency to embrace a faster and more convenient - but less healthy and enjoyable - way of living. In his home country of Italy, he saw that because of the globalization of the food industry, many small local farms could no longer compete with the lower-cost producers abroad and were beginning to close down. Petrini promoted Slow Food as an alternative to the global expansion of fast-food culture, in which food products are shipped around the world for mass-production and consumption.
Strict animal protection legislature was recently passed in the European Union (EU). The law bans the sale of all cosmetics that have been developed through animal testing. The EU has had anti-animal-testing laws in place since 2009, but the new law has been expanded to include all ingredients in cosmetic products regardless of where in the world the animal testing took place. For example, French cosmetics corporations can no longer purchase ingredients produced in China or elsewhere if animals were used in lab testing during the development of those ingredients.
