Chairs should support the body in a way which minimises awkward postures and
provides comfort, however, chair positions may need to be changed often. No chair can provide a
perfect position for long periods and it is important to change postures and get up from a chair
many times during the day’s work. Setting up an adjustable chair for optimum support is shown in
Appendix A.
Alternative seating
Some forms of alternative seating are designed to enable people to sit with the hips at an angle
that is believed to reduce pressure on the lower back. These types of seating are not necessarily
better or worse than conventional adjustable office chairs, but may not provide the optimum support
in a workplace where
many hours of the day may be spent in sitting.
