Along with I and the Village, this art work is among Marc Chagall’s most recognized oil paintings. The original Self-Portrait with Seven Fingers was created in Montparnasse circa 1912 at the squalid studios Chagall shared with around two hundred other artists. This was his first self portrait and the original is currently part of the permanent collection at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. This wonderful hand painted copy captures the spirit and color of the original which is a notable example of early Cubist works: An avant-garde revolutionary movement of the twentieth century pioneered by Picasso and Braque.
Out of the main window in the composition we see Paris: Upon the wall we see the Belarusian village of Vitebsk where Chagall hailed from. Chagall was Jewish and his paintings often reflect his love of Yiddish folklore and religious beliefs. In the Kabbalah the number seven represents completeness: God created the world in seven days: There are six directions in the world (North, East, South, West, up to the heavens and down) that always surround the seventh point – which is the point at which we stand.
The colors of this painting are powerful and uplifting. Self-Portrait with Seven Fingers represents a turning point for the arts: It also represents one of the most important figures in the development of modern art – Marc Chagall.
