Fig. 3 shows the growth curves of D. tertiolecta with red LEDs, white LEDs, and fluorescent lights under the initial light intensities of 100 lE/(m2 s), a photoperiod of 15 h light:9 h dark, 4% CO2, a temperature of 23 C, and pH of between 6.4 and 7.0 in culture flasks. All of the growth profiles displayed the same pattern with three different phases: lag phase, exponential phase, and stationary phase. No difference in growth was observed with red LEDs, white LEDs, and fluorescent lights, and the maximum cell density (approximately 1.2 107 cells/mL) was achieved after 9 days of cultivation.
