In the installation, 12 hanging speakers will contain the live recordings of applause, a sound that is most commonly heard between the hours of 9:30pm – midnight.
Externally, the art piece, as a running time based installation, asks the question, “Can a sound piece still exist when one leaves the room?“ To answer this question the work will play or be ‘on’ for 24 hours without interruption. Once listener’s have experienced the installation they take the memory of the experience along with the knowledge that the piece will be running, regardless of where the listener is located that day, making the installation even more ‘permanent’.
While part of this proposal is meant to create a masking of various applause trajectories into the sound of a rainstorm, the piece as a whole is meant to embody the spirit of Inkonst and the city of Malmö, Sweden.
