Counseling or Social Work
If you are planning for a career in the social services, you have a few options for which degree to pursue. A graduate program in social work and a master’s in counseling may seem similar, but it’s important to choose the program that will help you achieve your professional goals.
Master of Social Work
To practice in the field of social work, you must earn a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from an accredited graduate school and seek licensure in your state. Most MSW programs will combine classwork with a clinical field placement, and students are usually able to choose a focus of study in a specific area of social work. Popular fields of study in graduate social work programs include community organizing, advocacy, families and children, and mental health. While the social work field does offer a Doctor of Social Work (DSW) and a Ph.D. in Social Work, the MSW is considered a terminal degree.
Master of Counseling
To obtain state licensure to practice as a counselor, you must earn a master’s degree in counseling. Master’s degree in counseling programs are offered in marital, couple, and family counseling; mental health counseling; school counseling; and education counseling. Only students in CACREP-accredited masters in counseling programs are eligible to sit for state licensure. Once licensed, you will be able to work as a counselor in professional settings, including schools, community organizations and private practice.
Comparison
While a graduate degree in social work and a master’s in counseling will prepare you for licensure, you will ultimately have to decide which career track most appeals to you before you choose your degree program. Social workers improve the quality of life and well-being of individuals and communities through intervention, advocacy and direct practice. A licensed professional counselor (LCP) is a mental health professional who works with individuals in specific settings. It is important to note that licensed social workers can work as counselors, but counselors cannot work as social workers.
