Meaningful learning can also be promoted by providing variety in the learning activities. Given that students are accepting more responsibility and that they are working in authentic contexts that relate to things they know, students must be free to pursue a variety of ways to learn. Some students learn better individually, others in groups. Some like to read, others like to listen. Some take notes, others sit listening. Some like to talk things out with others, while others need time to reflect. Still others prefer to approach a problem from the end rather than the beginning. If we believe that proposition, then we must give students more responsibility, then the responsibility must carry over into the ways they gather information and learn content—skills needed to be life-long learners.
