Regarding the duration of transport, the Council Regulation (EC) no. 1/2005 states that long journeys (>8 h) are permitted for piglets above 10 kg. Where long transport of early weaned piglets (4–7 kg) is permitted, in journeys lasting for 24 h, the lying frequency increased and the standing and sitting frequencies decreased after the first 12 h of transport (Lewis and Berry, 2006). Increasing the duration of the transport not only had an impact on some indicators of accustomization, it also led to increasing drinking post-transport and higher haematocrit, indicative of dehydration and thirst (Lewis and Berry, 2006).
