People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) leader Suthep Thaugsuban quietly entered the monkhood at a Buddhist temple in his hometown in the southern province of Surat Thani on Tuesday morning.
It was not known why Mr Suthep made the decision or how long he would remain a monk.
His low-profile ordination was made public only after former Democrat Party MP Theptai Seanapong on Tuesday evening tweeted a photo of Mr Suthep in a monk's robe with the caption “Lung Kamnan made a lightning decision to be ordained at Wat Tha Sai and will live as a monk at Wat Suan Mokkh.”
He was given the monastic name of “Prapakaro”, or “the light maker".
Mr Theptai later tweeted that “Lung Kamnan just had dinner with friends in Bangkok last night, then flew to Surat Thani this morning, and went straight to the temple with his driver for the ordination ceremony.”
[Wat Tha Sai is located in tambon Tha Thong Mai of Kanchanadit district.]
Wat Suan Mokkh, short for Suan Mokkhapalaram (formally known as Wat Tharnnamlai), is a forest monastery in Chaiya district founded by the late highly revered Buddhadhasa Bhikkhu. At a younger age, Phra Suthep was ordained at Wat Suan Mokkh for 40 days and had Buddhadhasa Bhikkhu as his ajarn.
The photo showed Phra Suthep standing next to his nephew, who was ordained at the same time.
Phra Suthep only told a few PDRC leaders close to him about the planned ordination. Even his two brothers, Thani and Chane, did not know, according to a Thai Rath report.
Former PDRC spokesman Akanat Phromphan left the monkhood early this month after he had been ordained at Wat Chonprathan Rangsarit in Nonthaburi for 15 days, saying he wanted to make merit for the protesters killed during the PDRC’s six-month street protests.
It was speculated that Phra Suthep, as PDRC’s ex-front-man, may have decided to wear the saffron robe for the same reason.
