Although the majority of new mothers initiate
breastfeeding, many discontinue breastfeeding
prematurely prior to current recommendations and
individual goals. Evidence from this study demonstrated
that the self-e⁄cacy intervention was both
feasible and acceptable. In addition, compliance
with the trial protocol was clearly documented suggesting
a high degree of internal validity. As this was
the ¢rst trial evaluating the self-e⁄cacy intervention,
a larger, adequately powered trial is required
to determine the e¡ect of the self-e⁄cacy intervention
that is delivered by a health care professional
in person and with telephone follow-up versus standard
care on breastfeeding self-e⁄cacy, breastfeeding
duration, and breastfeeding exclusivity
