Even as indirectly affected firms restarted their production activities by changing their procurement
partners, most directly affected firms also recovered quickly. According to JETRO Bangkok’s
interview with the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand, as of December 10, 2012, while nearly
10% of factories in the above-mentioned seven flooded industrial parks decided to relocate either to
other areas in Thailand or to other countries, around 80% restarted their production activities without
any relocation. This reflects the fact that relocation would have entailed significant time and cost, and
indicates that these firms preferred to resume their product supply to their customers as soon as possible.
However, some of these factories scaled down production from their pre-flood levels to lower
the risk of negative impact from future flooding.
