The collection and disposal of solid wastes is rapidly
becoming one of the major unsolved problems of urban
areas in India. For the small community located well
outside the large metropolitan area, disposal of an average
of 0.2–0.3 kg of refuse per person per day presents
less of a problem than its collection. For the large
metropolitan cities like Mumbai, however, the problem
of disposal as well as collection is subject to a multiplier
that in most cases is in millions. It is estimated that
about 48 million tonnes of urban municipal solid wastes
is generated daily in the country (Agarwal et al., 2005).
Per capita waste generation in major cities ranges from
0.20 to 0.60 kg per day
