Wittmann et al. [14] in the determination of
acetic acid in aqueous samples. Benzyl bromide and
n-hexylchloroformate were used to esterify acetic acid in
solution, followed by SPME sampling with a PA-coated
fiber. No n-hexyl acetate was observed, but benzyl
bromide did produce its corresponding ester. The
optimization of the benzyl acetate extraction and quantification
led to its LOD of 0.260 lM. The sample volume
was 2 mL, which were mixed with 1 mL of buffer and
5–20 lL of benzyl bromide. The derivatization reaction
was allowed to proceed for 210 min at 50 C. It is
noteworthy that, although the PA-coated fiber showed
lower extraction yields than other coatings tested, it was
selected because it permitted lower RSDs to be obtained.
A 30-min HS-SPME sampling period was utilized.
