Japan’s social security benefits came to
¥103.4 trillion in fiscal 2010, or ¥808,100 per
capita, an amount that has risen in pace with
the rapid aging of the population. Pensions
accounted for 50.7% of the total, medical
spending for 31.2%, and welfare and other
expenses for 18.1%. Social security benefits
for the elderly came to ¥63.6 trillion, or about
69.5% of the total.
