As McDermott and Redish allude in the introduction of
their landmark resource letter, at the heart of all education
research is the goal of “improvement.”
This resource letter is meant to contribute to the establishment
of a research base that can serve as a resource
for ongoing improvement and enrichment of student
learning in physics Ref. 1, p. 755.
After all, if one were of the opinion that the state of education
was as it should be, then there would be no need to put
effort into better understanding of how, when, or why students
learn. The physics education research community has
developed around this goal of improving physics education
and believes that such improvement is possible. This goal is
often more generally referred to as “reforming” physics instruction.
