2.4. Impact assessment
The impact assessment method applied in this study was the
Cumulative Exergy Extraction from the Natural Environment
(CEENE) method (Dewulf et al., 2007). The CEENE method allows an
extended footprint of resources used, i.e. compared to other
resource-based indicators such as the Cumulative Energy Demand
(CED) (Frischknecht et al., 2007) and the Cumulative Exergy
Demand (CExD) (Bösch et al., 2007). The CEENE method subdivides
resources into eight categories: fossil fuels, metal ores, nuclear
energy, land resources including land for biomass production,
renewable resources (different from biomass for which land use
during its production was taken into account), minerals, atmospheric
resources and water resources. The CExD method does not
account for land use and the CED method also does not evaluate
water, minerals and metals, nor land use.
