Recognizing the fact that PP and PE have gained a major positionin the global plastics market, which accounts for around 50% of theoverall plastics demand in Europe [3], PHAs are representing an attractive alternative to those petrochemically derived materials, while their use can minimize the detrimental impact of persistent plastics on the environment. However, their high production costis still the major drawback for their commercialization. Among the ways being proposed for decreasing PHAs high production cost, theuse of mixed microbial consortia grown on synthetic feeds tocks, such as sugars, as well as the use of pure cultures grown on waste streams have been reported to result in the reduction of the overall production cost by 30–40% [4].
