The knowledge of the inflorescence capability to donate
pollen is essential to any sugarcane breeding program as in
a cross between two genotypes the inflorescence of one
genotype will behave as pollen donor (male) while the
other as pollen receptor (female) (Bull and Glasziou 1975;
McIntyrre and Jackson 2001; Cheavegatti-Gianotto et al.
2011). Besides the inflorescence classification as pollen
donor or receptor, pollen viability is also essential to perform
a cross.
