Methods A literature search was conducted using Psych Info, CINAHL, Medline and PubMed databases. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI), AD and cog* were each combined with gait, balance, fine motor, gross motor and extrapyramidal signs. Characteristics of included articles were research which: (1) examined the relationship between a motor domain and a cognitive domain in older adults with early cognitive decline; (2) used objective clinical measures of motor function and cognitive status; (3) used quantitative cross- sectional or longitudinal analysis to examine relation- ships between cognitive and motor function; (4) examined adults over 40 years of age. In addition, if
a study had been used as a foundation for diagnostic criteria, it was included for discussion. Exclusion criteria were research which: (1) used case study, qualitative or descriptive designs exclu- sively; (2) failed to screen for Parkinson’s disease when examining EPS and cognition; (3) used measures of function that represent substantial integration of cognitive and motor domains (such as executive function).
