Fecal consistency was visually assessed at 0900 and 1600 h each day
by observers who were blind to treatments with the use of a modification
of the method described by Ma et al. (20). Fresh excreta were graded by
using the following scale: 0 = solid, 1 = semisolid, 2 = semiliquid, and 3 =
liquid. The occurrence of diarrhea was defined as production of grade 2
or 3 feces for 2 continuous days.
