The third take-away is to foster partnerships with the private
sector to support supply chain coordination. The above examples
from high value markets show what is feasible, and also reveal
that a strong public role has been important in many cases (see
Narrod et al., 2009 for examples in Kenya and India). Public–
private partnerships may offer the opportunity to achieve greater
efficiency in moving to higher standards through adoption of
approaches that are acceptable to the private sector and viable
in practice (Martinez et al., 2007). Such partnerships also have the
potential to address weak enforcement capacity in developing
countries, through leveraging industry incentives.
