Concentrated cells were added to a previously
sterilized 4% (w:v) solution of k-carrageenan at
35°C. The suspension was then extruded as
small drops by means of hypodermic syringe
into a stirred solution of KCl (20 g l1) and
CaCl2 (0.2 g1) at 4°C where spherical beads of
0.7–0.8 mm were formed. After 30 min the
