A committee, chaired by Royal Thai Police adviser Pol Gen Chaiya Siri-ampankul, resubmitted its report on Wednesday and Pol Gen Somyot told reporters Thursday that he needed a few more days to decide whether to strip the fugitive ex-premier's lieutenant colonel rank.
He added that lawyers will double-check the report to ensure that, this time, it meets all requirements.
''It should be okay to take a few more days. I don't want to rush the decision so mistakes are avoided,'' he said.
Pol Gen Somyot sent the report back to the committee twice, first because it wasn't signed properly and then because he wanted panellists to provide more detail to justify revocation of Thaksin's rank. Specifically, he asked for evidence that Thaksin had damaged the police force.
Pol Gen Somyot said on Thursday that he hoped all details would be completed this time.
The police chief insisted the committee thoroughly study the offenses committed by Thaksin and whether they were enough to strip him of his rank.
The committee members unanimously voted on June 1 to confirm their decision to strip Thaksin of his tank, citing his status as a criminal fugitive.
Thaksin was sentenced in 2008 to two years behind bars on abusing authority in the Ratchadaphisek land deal. The verdict was issued absentia, as he jumped bail before sentencing to attend the opening ceremony of the Olympics Games in Beijing. An arrest warrant was issued for him after he ignored the bail conditions.
The shuffling of the report between the two offices sparked criticism that the police chief was dragging his feet on this issue.
Pol Gen Somyot has said on several occasions that he would not be pressured on this issue and denied he was reluctant to come down with the decision.
The move to strip Thaksin's rank came after the former prime minister gave an interview in Seoul on May 20 alleging privy councillors had masterminded the coup last year.
