Loxogramme (Bl.) Pr. is a small epiphytic genus of tropical polypodiaceous
ferns, regarded by contemporary pteridologists as of
doubtful affinities. During the course of a morphological study of
the spores of Indian ferns, it became apparent that some species of
the genus possess interesting spore characters. The present communication
is an account of these morphological peculiarities, and deals
with the spore morphology of Loxogramnie lanceolafa (Sw.) Pr., type
species of the genus, as ell as L. avenia (Bl.) Pr. and L. involtrfa
(Don) Pr. Material for this study has been collected from wild
specimens in the forests of Assam and the Nilgiri Hills. The observations
arc based on acetolysed spores mounted in glycerine jelly
(Erdtman 1952). The size figures are averages of 50 to 100 measurements
in each plane. Herbarium specimens of tlie plants studied, as
well as the microscope slides pertaining to this study are deposited
in the Herbarium of the National Botanic Gardens, Lucltnow.
