For the quantitative segment of the study consenting participants viewed a video (i.e., the Moylan Assessment of progressive Aggression Tool [MAPAT], which depicted a violent assault of a psychiatric nurse. The validity and reliability of the MAPAT has been established (Moylan,2009).the nurse were asked to push the stop button on the remote at the time in the progression of aggression when they believed that restraint of the patient was the only effective intervention and no other less intrusive intervention (e.g., offering support, other de-escalation techniques) would provide safety. The MAPAT records time, which provides an in terval level of measure. Additional psychometric instruments were used as well, but discussion of these instruments is beyond the scope of the current article. After viewing the video and completing the instruments, participants completed a narrative section describing their experience with assault. This description was requested because the researchers of the current article believed that aspects of the assault that were not addressed in the quantitative measure instrument may arise. In addition, participants were offered the opportunity to discuss any aspects of the CNS researcher. They were informed that the results of the study findings would be used to identify factors that could potentially increase safety in acute care psychiatry
