1928 took Mies van der Rohe unsuccessful at four contests, now the all-glass facade and the variable ground plan already were demonstrating realistic and represented a further stage of development to its skyscrapers in the United States. The design for the redesign of Alexanderplatz in Berlin-Mitte was doing his urbanistic premises of roadworthiness and structural consolidation in major cities.
Mid-1928 were probably commissioned mainly due to the great success of the Stuttgart Werkbund Exhibition with the artistic direction of the German section of the 1929 World Exposition in Barcelona Mies van der Rohe and Reich. They created here a few exhibition areas together, and Mies van der Rohe built yet an official reception building it. This almost purposeless representational was the main attraction of the entire World Expo and has since been considered one of the most significant works of modern architecture in general: the Barcelona Pavilion.
End of 1928, Mies van der Rohe began with the design for the Tugendhat House in Brno, Czech Republic (Brno), which was completed in 1930 and is also considered one of the masterpieces of modern architecture. There is now a World Heritage Site by the United Nations. The interior was created in collaboration with Lilly Reich.
