SHARERS
addition to tenancy arrangements that involve cash payments of rent, there are also sharers or 'free-rent tenants' who are permitted to occupy a I dwelling with the owner or tenant. Sharers are typically the children or employees of the owner or principal tenant, and may often be seen as "disguised renters' by making an in-kind contribution to household expenditure through domestic work or child care. In Mexico Gilbert (1990)found that newly arriving migrants to cities rarely moved directly into home-ownership, most tending to follow the transition from sharing to renting to ownership; while in the Nigerian capital city of Abuja, sharing of dwelling units was a common strategy adopted by both middle- and low-income households to counter a limited housing supply and to reduce housing costs.
