Western cultures are individualistic, so people rely on personal judgment and actions (Hofstede, 1991; Triandis,1994). Eastern cultures emphasize harmony among people, and between people and nature, and value collective judgment. Tomkins (1984) reported that an individual’s psychological makeup is the result of this cultural dimension. He suggested that human beings, in Western civilization, have tended toward self-celebration, positive or negative. In Asian thought, another alternative is represented; harmony between humans and nature.
