The objectiveinthisstudywastoevaluatetheeffectsofsubstitutinghighoilcorn(HOC)
for typicalcorn(TC)onperformance,carcasscharacteristics,meatquality,andlongissimus
muscle(LM)fattyacidprofileofNelloresteersfeddietscontainingdifferentamountsof
corn. Forty-eightindividuallyfedNelloresteers(441732 kginitialbodyweight)were
allocatedbybodyweighttofourpensequippedwithelectronicgatesinarandomized
completeblockdesignwithsixtreatmentsina23 factorialarrangementoftreatments,
with twocorntypes(CT)andthreecornlevels(CL).Treatmentsconsistedofdiets
containing25,40,or55%TCorHOConadrymatter(DM)basis.Animalswereconfined
for 84dayssothatDMintakeandaveragedailygain(ADG)weremeasuredindividually.
Afterthefeedlotperiod,animalswereslaughteredatacommercialslaughterhouse,
carcass characteristicswereevaluated,andLMsampleswerecollectedforfurtheranalyses
of meatqualityandfattyacidprofile.StatisticalanalyseswereconductedusingtheMIXED
procedure ofSAS.NodifferencesamongCLandCTwereobservedforDMintake,
metabolizableenergyintake,gaintofeedratio,anddietarynetenergyformaintenance
and gain.SteersreceivingHOChadgreaterADGincomparisonwiththosefedTCwhenCL
was25%,butnodifferenceswereobservedwhenCLwas40or55%.CookinglossandLM
redness werelinearlydecreased(P ≤ 0.05)withtheincreasingCL.NoeffectsofCLandCT
wereobservedforanyothercarcasscharacteristicsandmeatqualityvariables.TheLM
